Book ponderings and a Kiss My Asphalt t-shirt giveaway

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been reading a lot of books lately. I think it's the call of the deck. Now that the sun is shining and it's just warm enough to sit outside and relax, a book seems like the perfect thing to take outside with me. That and a big 'ole glass of iced tea. Yum.

But I had a little conversation with my editor this morning that is making me look at my book stack a bit differently. The art department is finishing up on the cover for A Tale of Two Demon Slayers, which is the next Accidental Demon Slayer book. It's not due to my editor until the end of July and it's not out in stores until Feb 2010. So what do they need from me? Back cover copy.

Many authors don't write their own back cover summaries, but since I was an advertising writer for many moons, I volunteered to write the back covers for both The Accidental Demon Slayer and The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers. It's fun to have that kind of input. And I know the book, right? But lo and behold, I'm going through my book stack (conveniently located by the door to the deck), checking out the backs of books, and pondering ways to summarize a whole 320 page adventure into two paragraphs. Hmm...

So let me ask you. What draws you in when you read that back cover? An interesting story premise? The writing itself? Or something else?

Oh and because the sun is shining and it is such a gorgeous day, one commenter is going to win a Kiss My Asphalt t-shirt.

What draws me in is ALWAYS the cover of the book. If the cover looks good, I will read the back of the book & see if it looks like something I will want to read. Thanks for the contest!

sometimes it is just as easy as beautiful words woven together ar a murderers thoughts in the first paragraph.

I always read the summary to see if I would be interested in the story.

To be honest, I don't really pay much attention(if any) to blurbs/quotes from reviewers or other authors on the cover, front or back. The writing itself helps but an interesting story premise is usually enough to get me to pick up a book. If the synopsis ends with a feeling of impending DOOOOOOM, all the better. :)

action, and a love story keeps me interested...

Hmm. The back cover blurb should draw me in, but it should absolutely not reveal too much of the story. Absolutely not. I won't even read 99% of reviews because they provide too much plot detail.

The back blurb is the most important thing, sure I love a good cover which makes me pick it up. But there has to be something fun, exciting or sexy on the back to hook me

I read the back covers for two reasons, I read TONS of books and once in a while I lose track of WHAT I have read, so for older books I read the cover to see if I remember the story! New books I will read it to get a feel of the kind of book it is, I like a little Mysery to it so don't spell it out but don't mislead either. I hate when the cover says somthing that never happens in the book.

Something that wows me. I generally like a paragraph blurb from Hero and a paragraph blurb from Heroine.

I like a great summary and an excerpt if possible!

What is writen on the back is usually how I pick a book, sometimes a review might help but the summary is what draws me to a book.

Hi Angie!
Oh I like when there's a bit about the hero and a bit about the heroine on the back and a glimpse into what the story is. I just love to see what kind of personality the hero and heroine are!

The storyline and giving me just enough info to draw me in so I want to read the book to find out what happens!
Thanks

First the title and cover get my interest then I always read the summary to see if I would be interested in the story.

Generally I am first caught by the cover art and then I read the back to see if the premise of the story sounds like something that will hold me.

what draws me in on a back cover are quotes from well known people, authors or otherwise, as well as awards or author information that is different.

When the back cover has a great overview or synapsis, one that sounds juicy or scarey or eclectic, I am sucked in like the book is a black hole lol
ps and good art work helps, but other writer recommendations I always take with a grain of salt

What draws me in is typically a climatic part of the story on the back or reviews by famous authors/articles. Thank you!
